The Power of Spiritual Nonviolence

An Online Conversation with Marie Dennis

Are nonviolent movements really as effective as violent ones at achieving lasting social transformation? Why did some of modern era's greatest transformers dedicate their lives to nonviolence, calling it "mightier than the mightiest weapon" (Gandhi), and "the sword that heals" and "organized love" (MLK, Jr.) that overcomes oppression without brutality?

Join Marie Dennis, senior program director of Pax Christi International's Catholic Nonviolence Initiative, as she explores the spiritual roots of this power. She illustrates how nonviolence is not merely a tactic, but a rigorous spiritual practice. While often mistaken for passivity, this disciplined approach deepens the spiritual maturity of the practitioner and simultaneously awakens the perpetrator of injustice to his or her own humanity. In a world torn by violence and division, nonviolence offers a courageous path forward—one that leads to a more peaceful, equitable and just society.

Marie Dennis is former national chairperson of Pax Christi, USA, and was co-president of the Pax Christi International board from 1999 to 2019. She is also an author of several books including, St. Francis and Diversity of Vocations. Don't miss this opportunity to dialogue with one of today's foremost leaders of the international spiritual nonviolence movement!
