Practicing Loving-Kindness in the Midst of Hardship

A Conversation with Oneika Mays

How can the practice of ‘metta’ (loving-kindness) help us meet the present tumult of the world; how can it help us heal our woundedness and experience our kinship with all life? Join author, healer and meditation teacher Oneika Mays as she speaks about her experience of teaching yoga and mindfulness to people incarcerated at Rikers Island, New York, one of the country’s most notorious prisons.

In her new book, Sit with Me: A No-BS Journey into Meditation and Mindfulness, Oneika shares her story at Rikers Island and shows how meditation can be a powerful tool to help people meet the most difficult of situations. During our program, Oneika will also help us experience the powerful practice of ‘metta’ which has been life-changing for her and countless others.

Oneika has taught meditation for 15 years and is one of today's leaders and teachers of the mindful meditation movement, She is also a specialist in healing and trauma sensitivity. Oneika tells us that meditation isn’t about achieving some perfect state; it’s about showing up ‘as you are’ and practicing loving-kindness—starting with yourself!
